With release Q1/12, the FlowTraq full-fidelity network flow analyzer will feature:

Email (SMTP) notifications are now generated for Alerts, Scheduled Reports, and System Messages.

New configuration option on the Dashboard Report Widget to specify how many ranking entries to retrieve (10, 25, 50, 100, or 1000).

Interactive connection graphs – explore the relationship between entities in pairwise views and interactively filter them. This is an experimental feature – we’re looking for feedback to make this a great feature in a future release.

Significant flow database access optimizations.

The filtering language has been made significantly more intuitive (more info here http://support.proquesys.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=77 ).

Improved documentation and error reporting.

Bug fixes: Addressed an issue where PDF reports would fail to be written correctly to certain types of file shares. And, fixed an issue where a misconfigured dashboard Chart widget could gradually fill a server’s query input queue, slowing server response for all users.

LOIC, or “Low Orbit Ion Cannon”is a malicious traffic generation tool named after the space-based super weapon from the Command and Conquer video games. A user can download a LOIC and generate large quantities of web or UDP requests, aimed at a target of choice. LOIC gained some public attention when it was used in several recent high-profile denial-of-service (DDOS) attacks.

Although a LOIC does not use exploits to target software vulnerabilities in order to break into your servers, it can cause serious and prolonged outages when used by many individuals at once to target your infrastructure. The LOIC traffic generator is very easy to use, and a coordinated effort by several individuals can quickly create a “voluntary botnet” that can target a single system with a DDOS attack.

LOIC works by creating HTTP GET requests, or UDP packets with a payload of the user’s choice, and sends these at the target IP address as fast as the user desires. Multiple systems making requests to your webserver as fast as possible will quickly overwhelm your server, and render it unavailable to legitimate customers.

No Malicious Code = No Detection

Because the connections themselves contain no malicious payload, and are in effect harmless requests, a LOIC DDOS attack will not be detected or stopped by signature based IDS or IPS systems. FlowTraq offers features that help to quickly detect the use of a LOIC, and similar DDOS tools, against your network, or inside your network.

Analysis with Alerts Offers Better Defense against LOIC Facilitated Attacks

The red flag for any DDOS activity, whether it originates from your network, or is targeted at your network, is the sheer number of initiated connections. A plot of “connections initiated” for “IP pairs” in Flowtraq will quickly show any two systems that have an unusually high rate of connection initiation. All LOIC offenders
can then be quickly identified and the appropriate actions taken.

LOIC systems are available for download by anyone. Ensure your IT infrastructure is protected against Denial of Services and DDOS attacks using the most comprehensive network flow analyzer software available – FlowTraq by ProQueSys.

FlowTraq, from ProQueSys, helps IT Administrators find data leaks in the network, investigate compromises, and monitor network usage such as bandwidth consumption, applications in use, and changes in behavior or network activity that may indicate a problem. FlowTraq is designed to complement and improve existing network operations by providing traceability, statistics, and identification of potential security events.

We are proud to announce the release of FlowTraq Q3/11 on 10/14/2011. Building on other enhancements delivered in 2011, which included nanosecond precision, support for VLAN IDs, and Autonomous System numbers, we’ve made incremental improvements in a number of areas:

Goodbye, top-10 lists; hello, top-N lists! Get up to the top 1000 hosts, host pairs, applications, interfaces, and more. This was our most-requested feature in 2011.

We made speed improvements to our query processing system so FlowTraq can perform complex queries faster. This was our second most-requested feature in 2011.

We’ve added a few filtering fields, and added the ability to type a raw query string into the GUI just like you can on the command line:

The database size configuration is more flexible and informative.

We improved the look of our printed reports, and made the Alerting and Report scheduling system more robust.

All told, FlowTraq Q3/11 is filled with new features, bug fixes, and stability enhancements. It’s is the best version of FlowTraq yet, and we think you agree.

ProQueSys FlowTraq now offers nanosecond precision in flow accounting when used in combination with ProQueSys Flow exporter, making it the highest precision flow forensic tool available.

With the continual increase in network speeds, the number of packets per second is growing rapidly. Although the industry standard NetFlow format is convenient for traffic monitoring and incident investigations, NetFlow timestamps are limited to millisecond accuracy. When investigating intrusions and compromises, the difference between cause and effect is often much smaller than a millisecond.

ProQueSys FlowTraq now offers nanosecond precision in flow accounting when used in combination with ProQueSys Flow exporter, making it the highest precision flow forensic tool available.

ProQueSys FlowTraq is designed to offer long-term traffic audit capabilities, supporting full fidelity history for compliance monitoring and incident investigation. Accurate traffic records show who connected, when, from where, and how long, allowing network operators and compliance auditors to quickly assess the scope of risks and take appropriate action.

Other new enhancements include a refreshed dashboard and additional workspace templates.

Existing customers may upgrade to the Q2/11 release through our download site. If you would like to evaluate ProQueSys FlowTraq Q2/11, please contact us at 603.727.4477, or email support@proquesys.com

Lebanon, New Hampshire—ProQueSys, LLC is now shipping FlowTraq Lite, a version of its full-fidelity network monitoring, security, and forensics flow analyzer that is geared for lower-traffic networks. FlowTraq Lite provides the same fast, actionable intelligence as the regular version of the product, helping IT departments recover quickly and mitigate risk from security breaches.

FlowTraq Lite is designed to complement and improve existing network operations. It contains all of the monitoring, security, and forensics features of FlowTraq, but is limited to input flow rates that are less than 100 flows/second. FlowTraq Lite helps IT administrators find data leaks in the network, investigate compromises, and monitor network usage such as bandwidth consumption, applications in use and changes in behavior or network activity that may indicate a problem.

Commented Vince Berk, CEO of ProQueSys: "FlowTraq Lite is built on the fundamental principle of speed-to-information. We help you identify the source and scope of the problem, and anticipate threats before they occur, so you can be back to business sooner. We now offer an affordable solution for the SMB market that provides the same power as FlowTraq."

Commented Marion Bates, District Technology Director, School Administrative Unit 70, NH/VT: "In our public school district of 2000 students and no content filter, we had a serious problem with P2P filesharing and streaming video. Thanks to FlowTraq, we have both the bandwidth throttling and the P2P patterns well under control. FlowTraq tells us everything that's happening on the network, in real time. We can finally see the whole picture."
